An interactive exploration of what actually happens when you "talk" with an LLM.
I was already on the verge of self-hosting Postgres at work: Amazon RDS is too much of a black box, consuming our finances like there's no tomorrow.
An assessment of the practicality of using a 2013 Mac Pro - the trash can - as a home server.
Spoiler: it's feasible, and the author goes in minute details explaining how he did it.
This is kind of what I'm planning to do with my desktop computer: repurpose hardware I already own for a better, more useful use-case - hopefully consuming less power than the trash can!
I abandoned the idea of using a single operating system for everything a while back, it just doesn't scale with real-world use:
Linux is the best for technical work, servers and nowadays high-performance gaming
macOS is the best for on-the-go and creative work
Windows is sadly still looking for its nice :^)
It's fun to run a few machines for personal use with esoteric or uncommon OSes, but I just can't have it in the way of my work.
My nerdi desire to use MeshCore for literally anything only grew stronger after reading this post!

Gavin Harrison plays the second half of Anesthetize, one of the most famous Porcupine Tree song.
Mix and master on this video is outstanding, just like Harrison's playing.
Samsung is about to release a checks notes a phone that unfolds into a ~10" OLED display, not much thicker than an iPhone Air.
I gave foldables a fair test for a few weeks, daily-driving a Galaxy Fold 6 for close to a month: if it wasn't for Samsung's software, I would probably still own it to this day.
Not sure if the 2500$ price tag will be well-received by the public though.
Speaking of outlandishly priced objects, what the heck is going on with Sony?
5000$ dollars for a camera that:
can't record 4K 60fps videos
has the same lens as the original model presented 10 years ago
has a crappy EVF
can't process its own RAW files fast enough
It's a beautiful piece of hardware, but I can't really justify that price tag on a camera that is capitalizing on just nostalgia and rich people's lack of self-control.
